About St Mary Clydach

St Mary’s Church Clydach is the southernmost church in the Cwm Tawe Ministry Area. It serves the town of Clydach, Swansea, in the Lower Swansea Valley. The church has conducted worship in both Welsh and English since its opening, serving the needs of the bilingual population of the Parish of Clydach, though it mainly conducts worship in English today.

As well as its regular Wednesday and Sunday services, St Mary’s also regularly opens its doors to the community. Local primary schools, support groups, and social clubs often use the church as a meeting place, and it hosts larger services for the local community, such as for Remembrance Sunday. The Galilee Room (right), which opened in 2012, is a frequent place of social gathering.

The History of St Mary Clydach

Plans to build a place of worship for the Anglican community in Clydach date back to 1898. With Clydach about to become home to the Nickel Works, now known locally as the Mond (after its founder Dr Ludwig Mond), existent plans to found a small Anglican chapel in Clydach were scrapped and St Mary’s was instead built to handle the town’s growing population. The church opened on October 26th, 1905, and was originally a part of the Diocese of St David’s, before the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon was established.
